Louise Rogers Sumner

I live in Arlington, Virginia with my three sons. I have always photographed them, and our life together.

I love making black and white portraits of children. My goal is to capture the authentic look of any child, to catch the look that you will see when they are 25 and come home for the holidays.

A friend of my mother’s once sent over several photographs of herself as a child, taken in the 1950s, for me to see. They were charming yet beautiful, and showed the girl just as she was. My mom’s friend said, “I didn’t even realize the photographer was taking my picture. We just had a conversation.” When you come to my studio, I hope to have a conversation with your child, and to gain their trust, so that I can show their essence: how they are today, at three or eight or twelve, and also how they will be.
